I didn't know about the Jerry Lewis usage, never having seen The Stooge. The sound isn't in Robinson Crusoe on Mars, is it?

It's also used as a sound effect on the first Jefferson Starship album, BLOWS AGAINST THE EMPIRE, as part of a sci-fi suite that was actually nominated for a Hugo Award in 1970. Ann Robinson's line...

Re: War of the Worlds death ray sound effect in other films

I`ve heard it in other films but can not remember which ones. THE STOOGE was released the year before WotW by the same studio. So the sound debuted before WofW."Of course I had to get rid of the eye."

I think of it as "total THEM!" also -- so it was weird to find myself hearing that exact same wind sound effect in the 1930s British-made Warners film THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT with Ernest Thesiger!
